Courses and Classes - Music

DescriptionAmy has been writing and performing music for over 20 years. Beginning on the piano in childhood, she has explored a variety of instruments, including electronic organ, flute, guitar, voice, ukulele, bass guitar and African drums, in just as many styles – rock/pop, jazz, folk, alt. country, alt. pop and anti-folk. Heavily influenced from 7 years living in the UK, Amy returned to Melbourne in 2007 and formed alt. pop band ‘The Love Bites’. This was a project that followed closely behind ukulele-casio-twee-pop band ‘The Sweethearts’ (a collaboration with Joe Margetts, co-founder of Angular Records, London) – with more emphasis on the ukulele pop, less on the twee. She combined the coming-back-in-fashion ukulele with electric guitar, bass and drums, to produce a sound self-described as “a torpedo of pop nuggets, coming at you from underneath the galloping hooves of an angry moose”. 2009 saw Amy win the APRA Open award at the Darebin Music Feast Songwriter’s Awards, with her song Hill’s Hoist, followed by an appearance, ukulele in tow, on PBS’ Homebrew with Maddy Mac. Album – Spare Parts In 2010, Amy is pursuing a more serene, and stylistically diverse direction under her own name. The album Spare Parts, due to be completed mid-year, is a cauldron of British indie, twee-pop and alt country/folk. It is laden with ukulele-infused jangle, catchy melodic hooks, lyrical escapades, and nods to the likes of The Magnetic Fields, The Smiths, Kathryn Williams and Elliot Smith, plus lesser-known artists The Research (UK) and Bachelorette (New Zealand). Amy describes the album as a ‘cleansing of the clutter' of her personal songwriting hoard – both old and new songs making the cut to create a culmination of 15 years’ work. Film music In the final year of a composition degree at Box Hill Institute, Amy has become skilled at scoring music for film, TV and games, and wishes to pursue a career in this field in addition to songwriting and performing. Piano Teaching She is also a piano/keyboards teacher, working from her home studio in Reservoir, Melbourne.
